Environmental Sustainability & Impact

Protecting water. Nourishing land. Closing the nutrient loop for a more resilient future.

Rookwood is transforming the way nutrients are managed across water and land.
By removing harmful phosphates, recovering valuable resources and using nature‑based, circular technologies, we deliver practical solutions that improve ecosystems, support agriculture and contribute to long‑term environmental resilience.

Why It Matters

Excess phosphate is one of the leading drivers of water‑quality decline.
When nutrients build up in lakes, rivers and estuaries, they trigger:

  • harmful algal blooms
  • oxygen depletion
  • loss of biodiversity
  • increased turbidity
  • toxin release affecting wildlife and people

Tackling nutrient pollution is essential for healthy freshwater and coastal ecosystems — and for the communities and industries that rely on them.

Rookwood’s mission is simple:
Remove phosphate where it causes harm, and return it to land where it creates value.

A Circular, Nature‑Based Approach

Phosphate is essential for life, but only when it’s in the right place.
Rather than treating excess nutrients as waste, Rookwood recovers them and reintegrates them into natural cycles.

Our nuRe® technology, powered by patented PRM®, delivers a circular alternative to conventional treatment:

  1. Capture excess phosphate from water
  2. Stabilise and store it safely within PRM®
  3. Reuse it on land as a slow‑release fertiliser (LiftedP®) — subject to regulatory approval

This approach protects water while supporting agriculture and reducing reliance on mined phosphate.

Working With Natural Systems

Our technology mimics natural nutrient cycles:

  • Phosphate release is triggered by organic acids from plant roots
  • Recovered nutrients remain stable until needed
  • Carbon remains locked in mineralised or biochar form

This biomimetic approach reduces disruption, increases efficiency and supports long‑term environmental regeneration.

Tackling Pollution at Its Source

Nutrient pollution stems from:

  • Agricultural runoff
  • Treated urban wastewater
  • Industrial discharge
  • Diffuse catchment pressures

Rookwood’s solutions can be deployed at the point of pollution, within existing infrastructure or directly in affected water bodies — offering flexible, scalable pathways to restore ecological health.

Closing the Nutrient Loop for a Sustainable Food System

Phosphate is essential for global food security — yet reserves are finite and under pressure.

By recovering nutrients from water and returning them to land:

  • Waste becomes a resource
  • Mining demand is reduced
  • Agricultural soils gain long‑term resilience
  • Nutrient losses to the environment decrease

This is circularity in action, and central to a sustainable food and water future.

Real Environmental Gains

1. Preventing Harmful Algal Blooms

By removing excess phosphate, nuRe® reduces the risk of eutrophication and helps restore balance to freshwater and coastal ecosystems.

2. Supporting Healthy Aquatic Habitats

Lower nutrient levels improve water clarity, encourage native plant growth and create conditions for thriving aquatic life.

3. Removing Atmospheric CO₂

PRM® is carbon‑negative by design.
Its biochar‑based structure locks away carbon absorbed during biomass growth, while our production methods stabilise it for the long term — contributing to durable carbon removal.

4. Reducing Fertiliser Runoff

Recovered phosphate in LiftedP® is released gradually by plant–root interactions, reducing leaching and protecting nearby watercourses.

5. Cutting Reliance on Mined Phosphate

Recovering nutrients locally reduces pressure on finite global reserves and decreases the environmental footprint of mining, processing and transport.
